2013 is going to be a huge year in gaming. With expectations of new console announcements and AAA titles for gamers to look forward to the year already seems more than promising for the gaming community. One of the fan favorite genres in gaming has always been shooters. Whether the shooter is in first-person or third-person most players don’t really care as long as they are killing something. Shooters have grown to be the largest genre in the gaming industry and in 2013 the trend will be no different. 2013 sets the stage for some great shooters to look forward to, with over 15 shooter titles already in the cards for the year and the years has only just begun. As this genre still remains the super power in video games, one might be asking themselves which of all these titles is already set to be the more promising of the year?
Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel
Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel is an upcoming third-person shooter based on a Mexican drug cartel by the name of La GuadaƱa. Two new operatives will be forced out onto the dangerous streets of Mexico to try and stop the progressing drug war. These operative, Alpha and Bravo, will work together to end the conflict and complete their mission as Tactical Worldwide Operations.
This game will offer a slightly different experience for the player than previous games in the series as it is now being developed by Visceral Games (most notably know for the Dead Space series) and running off of a engine new to the franchise, Frostbite 2.
One thing that we have always loved about the series and something that we can expect from Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel is the cooperative experience. This is the perfect game to play alongside of your best friends because of the way the characters on the game have always interacted with each other.
The upcoming release is said to honor both split-screen and online co-op play so your friends from anywhere will be able to take part in the action. Cooperative play is one thing Army of Two has always done right and now in the hands of Visceral Games we can expect that experience to be even better.
Lost Planet 3
Capcom and Spark Unlimited are treating players to the next installment of the Lost Planet series in 2013, Lost Planet 3. The game will be a prequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions as well as Lost Planet 2 which will surly answer some questions for the fans of the series. Different from Lost Planet 2, Lost Planet 3 takes a turn to a story driven narrative to match the love that was drawn to the game in the first installment to the series. The game is taken back to the planet of E.D.N III at the time period where it is still in the middle of an ice age; adding a more ‘classic’ Lost Planet feel. The first few human colonists are sent to this new planet by NEVEC to mine the planet and send the minerals found back to earth. Main protagonist Jim Peyton is one of the settlers working for NEVEC who has a family waiting for him back home forcing the player to grow emotionally attached to his plotline. After the game progresses a little it is revealed that NEVEC is actually the antagonist and excitement picks up as players are sucked into the dramatics of the story.
Lost Planet 3 has that ‘Lost Planet’ feel in terms of battling and setting which is something that should please any fan of the series. The main difference between this game and the others in the series is that narrative approach which will keep fans attention as well as help to gain a new fan base. This game mirrors the greatness of the first Lost Planet game and is most likely the best turn for the Lost Planet series.
BioShock: Infinite
Being the third installment to such a popular franchise, BioShock: Infinite will be the game to play. After suffering from some dramatic lay-off the development team has taken some hits but has always stood right back up again to deliver a game that their fans will love. While fans did fall in love with the story aspects of the last games in the series Irrational Games has decided to take the much loved style and game play concepts in a new direction with a new plotline. Previous BioShock games took place deep within the depth of the sea while BioShock: Infinite will shoot players up into the sky putting the games; setting this game in the air-city of Columbia.
The protagonist, Booker DeWitt, is sent up into the sky in search of a young woman who had been held in the city for 12 years named Elizabeth. After the rescue of the girl the two are eventually pursued by the nativist and elite who founded the city and are trying to keep the area for America. Along with their two newfound enemies a rebel group titled Vox Populi joins in the growing conflict. When all the problems fit together like a puzzle centered on Elizabeth, the play will start really taking part in some classic BioShock action. BioShock: Infinite takes the series to a combative turn while still utilizing a combination of gear, weapons and psychokinetic powers available through “vigors”. There are slight changes to BioShock: Infinite that will enhance the experience while not turning their backs on the fans that are dedicated to the series.
Gears of War: Judgment
In 2013, People Can Fly and Epic Games are brining fans another games in Microsoft’s ever-popular Gears of War series. Gears of War quickly flew to being one of the fan favorite games of the industry and the expectations for Gears of War: Judgment
is no different than its processors. The game will be slightly
different from others in the Gears of War series as it follows that path
of characters Demon Baird and Augustus Cole before the events of the
first Gears of War game. The players will meet Kilo Squad, who
have been accused of treason at the command of Lt. Baird. The team was
sent into Halvo Bay in the middle of a battle against the Locust army
when they steal experimental COG technology.
Along with an immediately engaging plot, Gears of War: Judgment
will also feature an addictive multiplayer mode. The two most exciting
multiplayer modes will surely be Overrun and Free-of-all. The overrun
game mode is similar to past Gears of War title’s Horde mode
expect there are players controlling both the COGs and the Locust sides
of the fight. This mode brings competitive game play to a whole new
level without stressing players on kill count. Because the initial goal
is objective based it will be easy for new players to hope into battle
without feeling overpowered to the Gear of War pros out there. Free-for-all is really pretty self explanatory but something relatively new to the Gears of War series, making this mode more intimidating and violent as ever!
Battlefield 4
Battlefield 4 is what every gaming fan wanted to hear about and 2013 will be the year the widely anticipated sequel to Battlefield 3
will emerge. There has been little to no solid information released
about what the game will actually hold but players can guess from past
experience that it will be good. Medal of Honor: Warfighter
presented players with the chance to gain access to the anticipated beta
for upcoming Battlefield 4 but aside from that as of now there is not a
lot of go by. DICE and EA have grown much respect from the multiplayer
portion of Battlefield 3 so we can expect for that greatness to be matched when it come to Battlefield 4.
While players loved the multiplayer portion of the game, we have our
fingers crossed that they will not turn their backs on single player
again. Having it have been confirmed that it will once again take place
in a modern setting one can guess to be able to get their hands on some
of the latest and great weapons and equipment.
Sadly, that is all we can say about Battlefield 4 for the
time being but we all can expect to hear more on the title within the
coming months. Even with the vague information (not even a screenshot!)
regarding the title that has been released, being a sequel to
Battlefield 3 is incentive enough to keep this game on your radar in
2013.
